Chatham House Joins the British Embassy in Cairo to Celebrate Twenty Fifth Anniversary of Chevening Scholarship Scheme (28/09/2009)

Chatham House is an world renowned independent international affairs think-tank.  It has been the home of the Royal Institute of International Affairs for nearly nine decades as a world-leading source of independent analysis, informed debate and influential ideas on how to build a prosperous and secure world for all.   The British Embassy has joined forces with Chatham House Middle East and North Africa Programme to run a series of events in Egypt to celebrate 25 years of the Chevening Programme and strengthen understanding of key issues and connections between the UK and Egypt.

Chevening Scholarships are prestigious awards available to international students for study in the United Kingdom. Currently there are around 1000 Chevening scholars in Egypt who have studied in the UK over the last 25 years. They are working in diverse and challenging sectors such as politics, economics, agriculture, finance, academia, law, business and journalism.  

The scheme is managed by the British Council, on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The opening events will be held at the British Embassy in Cairo on 28 and 29 September. A special North Africa edition of International Affairs http://www.chathamhouse.org.uk/publications/ia/current/ will be launched and workshops will examine Egypt's economic challenges and Egypt's regional role. Speakers will come from the UK, Spain, France and Egypt. There will be 2 further events in December 2009 and March 2010.
