Career history

Dominic Asquith

The Honourable Dominic Asquith CMG is Her Majesty's Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt. Upon arrival on 16 December 2007 he said:

"Since I first set foot in the Middle East over thirty years ago, I have spent much of my time involved on issues that have directly affected the region. This is an exciting time to serve as British Ambassador in what Egyptians call the Mother of the World. Almost one in every ten tourists coming to Egypt in the past year was British. British companies have made Britain the largest foreign investor in Egypt. Britain is Egypt's fourth largest market. Our two governments have important roles to play in partnership to promote common interests - on political issues that are key to the region's future, developing our trade and investment, increasing our educational links, contributing to the spread of technical skills and the benefits of economic reform, and helping sustain the web of contacts between British and Egyptian individuals. I look forward to working with and, where I can, helping you."

Dominic Asquith arrived to take up his new appointment on 16 December 2007. He was the British Ambassador in Baghdad from 2006 to 2007 and Director at the FCO in London for Iraq from 2004 to 2006. He served previously in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Syria, the United States and Argentina. He was born in Zanzibar in 1957 and studied Greek, Latin, philosophy and ancient history at Oxford. He is accompanied by his wife Louise. They have two daughters and two sons born between 1989 and 1994.
