Chevening Scholarships

Historically Chevening House is the name of the official country residence of the British Foreign Secretary. In 1994 Douglas Hurd, then Foreign Secretary, renamed the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's Scholarships and Award Scheme - the British Chevening Scholarships programme, after Chevening House.

Today, the Chevening Scholarships Program has become one of the most important activities of the British Government in Egypt.  It has been running since 1986, and in that time some 850 of the brightest and best young Egyptians have benefited from a year’s study in the United Kingdom at post graduate level.  Nearly all of them have come straight back to Egypt with enhanced skills, near perfect English and first hand experience of living in the West. Many work for private companies, both international and Egyptian.  Others are in the public sector or work for NGOs.

The scholarships are fully funded and cover course fees, living allowance and return airfare. The scholarships are for postgraduate study of up to a maximum of twelve months. Most scholars undertake Masters programmes, but awards to pursue short courses or research for between three to twelve months are also offered.

Applications are invited for study in all subject areas, however priority will be given to the following: Sustainable Development, Environment, Human Rights & Good Governance, Economics, Finance & Banking, Media, Politics & International law.
